Manuscript Evaluations

This is a service I’d like to offer for any unpublished young adult authors who appreciate the criticisms in my reviews. Writing a book is hard work, and editing a book is a difficult task to take on alone. The purpose of a manuscript evaluation is to tell you what you’re doing right, what you’re doing wrong, and what you need to change if you want your book to be successful.

I can offer you my advice, as a reader, as a young person (I’m 22), and as someone with a degree in English and Psychology. (Sidenote–I love books about psychological disorders, and I would be more than happy to help you make sure you’re displaying the symptoms accurately).

My rate: $4 per 1,000 words.

Here’s how this works: You send an email to wasteyatime@gmail.com. Tell me the title of your book, what it’s about, and what things you know you need help with.* Include an attachment (Word document, rich text, PDF, or Google doc) with the first 1,000 words (give or take; you can finish the sentence) of your novel.

The first 1,000 words are free!* This is important. I am not a highly experienced editor, and I want you to know that you can trust me before you start paying me. Once you’ve sent me your first 1,000 words, I’ll send you my evaluation, and that should give you an idea of the type of feedback you’ll be getting from me. If you are satisfied and would like to request a longer evaluation, just respond to that email and we can negotiate a deadline and payment. If we decide on a deadline and the evaluation is not sent to you by that time, you will get a partial refund of 25% of what you paid for each day that I am late. If I’m four or more days late, you’ll get a full refund, and you can post nasty reviews about me all over the internet.

You don’t have to send me the whole book! I will evaluate however much you want me to, at the rate of $4 per 1,000 words. If you only want to send me the ending, that’s fine, but I won’t be able to give it as thorough of a review if I don’t know what happened in the beginning.

Ask me questions! I will likely have lots of things to say about whatever you send me, but if you’re wondering about the clarity of certain passages, or you want to know what I think about a specific character, etc., feel free to include those questions in your emails. I’ll make sure my answers are a part of my evaluation.

*Note: If you are self-publishing, I am not the person to help you with formatting, typesetting, etc. I can proofread for grammar and spelling, but I should not be your final step in preparing a book for publication.

*You can request evaluations for multiple novels if you’d like, but the free 1,000 words will only apply to the first one I receive.
